Strenger Hall – Yeshiva University High School for Boys – MTA

Strenger Hall

Life on Campus

Our dorm program is one-of-a-kind among Modern Orthodox Yeshiva High Schools. Living in the dormitory enables MTA Talmidim to expand their high school experience to unparalleled and unprecedented levels. Talmidim may choose to live on campus on a full-time, part-time or per-semester basis. Dorm students enjoy full access to the robust resources available on YU’s Wilf Campus, including all Batei Midrash, Libraries, Dining Hall as well as the gyms and pool located inside the Max Stern Athletic Center.

The MTA Dormitory is located in Strenger Hall, the same building that houses YU Security Headquarters; it’s quite literally the safest and most secure building on campus.

Our dorm community consists of both out-of-town and local Talmidim, who all share one thing in common – they want to maximize their time at MTA and enjoy everything that being at MTA has to offer, to the fullest extent possible.

Dorm Talmidim enjoy exclusive programming meant to enhance their experience well beyond that of our commuters. Dorm programs include weekly dorm dinner and chaburos led by YU undergraduates, which allows unprecedented access to some of YU’s top Talmidim who are looking to have an impact on MTA students. The dorm also hosts quarterly shabbatonim featuring uplifting teffilos, seudos, oneg shabbos and a motzei shabbos trip! Dormers also have the opportunity to participate in weekly on-campus shabbos programming at YU.

The welcoming and experienced dorm staff consists of half a dozen or more undergraduate Resident Advisors, most of whom are MTA Alumni who themselves spent time in the dorm during high school. The RAs not only supervise the dormitory 7 days a week, they actively engage and seek to forge personal relationships with dorm Talmidim,  helping them navigate on campus living. It also allows RAs to serve as important mentors to our dorm Talmidim, further impacting their High School experience in a uniquely meaningful way.

  • A home away from home, the  MTA dorm has afforded our sons and family the opportunity to be part of the YUHSB community. We are extremely grateful to have been able to send our sons to MTA because of the ability to dorm. Through the dorms, our boys have learned independence and responsibility, built relationships and forged friendships, not to mention all the fun they've had living with their peers. It has fostered a sense of appreciation in them too.  We are sincerely grateful for having had the opportunity to send our children to a school where we know they are well taken care of physically and spiritually. We appreciate all the time and effort the dorm counsellors and .... have put in to our sons and for helping to make their school experiences at MTA so special and memorable!

  • I like having access to resources while studying, and during down time I enjoy having the YU Gym and pool on campus. The dorm staff are always helpful and nice, making it easy to live in the dorms.

  • It’s nice to roll out of bed and be in school in minutes. Living in the dorm provides me the unique opportunity to learn with college and semicha students and the dorm staff at night, to give my learning and studies that extra edge in a personal way.

  • The dorm is a place where all students are welcomed into the strongest and most robust community in our high school. Living on (Yeshiva University’s) campus affords students in our dorm access to the greatest array of resources, opportunities and experiences, unrivaled by any other experience imaginable. Lucky is the boy who is exposed to what our dorm community has to offer.

Supervision

College, graduate and semicha students live in the dorm and serve as Resident Advisors, setting examples for our students and modeling the lifestyle that we hope our students will pursue. They are selected for their outstanding character and prior mentoring experience. Their work is monitored and supervised by a qualified Director of Dormitory Life. In addition, a young couple who live nearby on the YU campus serve as Av & Eim Bayit, opening their home to provide meals, events, and a family environment. The current ratio of students to advisors is less than 2 high school students per each dorm staff member.

Student Life

The dormitory is more than just a place to sleep; it is a structured and closely supervised living environment. Life in the dorm allows students to have a richer school experience with greater access to the Beis Medrash, the University library and other University facilities – including the Benjamin Gottesman Pool and the Max Stern Athletic Center. Students in the dorm also participate in activities and trips designed to create a sense of community within the dorm and to take advantage of what New York has to offer. Further, students in the dorm have the greatest flexibility to participate in after school activities held on campus, including attending the MTA Lions sports game, either as a player or making up the core of the Home Team fans.

On Shabbos, dorm students that choose to stay on campus participate in campus programming for davening and meals. Students are also able to eat at the home of the Av & Eim Bayit, and a Residence Advisor is always on duty. Ping Pong, Foosball, Bananagrams and many other classic ‘Shabbos games’ are available for use on Friday Night and Shabbos afternoon.
